ATAK for UAS Operations Course

Effectively employ sUAS in conjunction with ATAK for enhanced situational awareness in various operational contexts

August 22-23, 2024 - Fountain Valley, California

The RTC @ the Fountain Valley Campus - Fountain Valley California

Course Summary

The ATAK for UAS Operations Course was designed to enable public safety with the knowledge and ability to use the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) effectively. This two-day course leads attendees through a progression of understanding and application.  The course is essential for professionals seeking to leverage ATAK’s capabilities for critical missions to be well-equipped to handle complex ground and aerial data coordination scenarios.

Students will:

  • Demonstrate essential ATAK functions, including installation, navigation, and map features
  • Apply advanced ATAK settings for mesh networking and data management
  • Apply ATAK integration with sUAS, focusing on aircraft compatibility, software configurations, and real-time data sharing
  • Demonstrate ATAK and sUAS skills in simulated public safety scenarios

ATAK for UAS Operations was explicitly structured to engage learners of varying expertise, from beginners to seasoned users. The first day serves as an intensive ATAK orientation, laying the groundwork for integrating UAS into your ATAK skill set. This approach ensures all participants, regardless of their starting point, gain the proficiency needed to apply ATAK confidently in their UAS operations.

Equipment Requirements

Android Devices:

For enhanced performance and compatibility with UAS controllers, students should consider utilizing a Samsung S20, a comparable or newer model, with at least 8GB of RAM. A smartphone’s more compact form makes it a preferable option for mounting onto UAS controllers and offers better handling during field operations. For students bringing their own devices, current or recent Android versions (no more than three years old) would be preferable for compatibility and performance.

The current Platforms that are compatible with UAS Tool are as follows:

DJI V4:
Mavic Pro
Spark
Mavic Air
Phantom 3 (Advance and Pro)
Mavic 2 (All Versions)
Mavic 2 Enterprise
Mini 2
Air 2 (listed in the MSDK but has not been tested against)
Air 2S (listed in the MSDK but has not been tested against)
Phantom 4 (all Versions)
Phantom 4 V2
Inspire 1
Inspire 2
Matrice 600
Matrice 100
Matrice 210 (both models)

DJI V5:
Mavic 3 Thermal
Matrice 300
Matrice 350
Mini 3 Pro
Matrice 30(T)

Also, an Item of note: The first-generation Smart controller Used with the Mavic 2 series and the Phantom 4 V2 can no longer support the UAS Tool. The controller’s hardware does not have specs that support ATAK/UAS Tool and will crash.

Students bringing their assigned UAS equipment should verify its compatibility with ATAK before the start of class. Limited devices will be available to students who do not have compatible equipment.
