The UAS Commercial Program Operator’s Course is a 48-hour program of instruction designed to equip commercial UAS service providers the knowledge and skills necessary to create and implement an aviation program based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms. This instruction will also address integrating UAVs into traditional airborne operations, as well as the general aviation community. This class was specifically developed to ensure lawful commercial operation. This course was designed by law enforcement, including the technical advisor for the Los Angeles city criminal UAS municipal code. This allows for a 360 degree view of commercial drone operations.
The class begins with an online FAA test preparation course that culminates with an in-class review just prior to taking the FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test for the Remote Pilot Airman Certificate. Following the test, students will:
• Be guided through the application process for this FAA certificate
• Develop a safety management system for UAS
• Establish a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) maintenance program
• Examine UAS operations and limitations for inclusion in a SOP
• Create a UAV training program to address proficiency and currency issues
Each student will receive a minimum of eight hours of flight instruction and log at least two hours of actual time with an UAS as a member of an UAS deployment team. All instruction will be consistent with the FAA’s current rules and regulations.
Successful graduates will be qualified under the FAA’s Part 107, to operate as a Remote Pilot in Command for standard operations (pending a TSA background investigation) and have the ability to apply for FAA Certificates of Waiver for those instances that do not conform to Part 107. Students will return to their respective organizations as certified operators with fully developed program templates ready for management review.
The Los Angeles County Regional Training Center (LACRTC) is not affiliated with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA Remote Pilot Airman Certificate is achieved by successfully completing the FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test. LACRTC has partnered with FAA testing centers to include the FAA test as part of this course (test fee is included in the tuition).
